Miranda and Pansy sat on the veranda watching the sun glisten on the wave crests. While Pansy was happy to just be herself, Miranda craved attention; the little outfit she’d worn this day screamed ‘designer’. So she was wearing half a dress; the male guests adored her, lusted after her.

Are you a parking ticket – because you’ve got fine written all over you

Your daddy’s a thief because he stole the stars to put in your eyes

She left that particular spotlight to prepare for another tedious evening of mingling, which Pansy still insisted was the best opportunity for her to practice being nice. She arrived, her hair only slightly more rampant than usual. And she was challenged the moment she arrived.

“I’d like to speak with the manager, if it’s not an imposition,” said one elderly gentleman.

She responded nicely, “Not at all.” Then followed up with a wide smile. “It just so happens I’m the manager so how can I be of service?”

“Then I’ll speak to the owner,” the old man insisted.

“I am the owner so – so…” So what? Push off you grizzly old bugger? Pansy’s warning words ringing in her ears like well-clapped church bells.

“Then I’d like to tell you that you, young lass, are rude.”

Oh? “You were expecting someone with manners? A little courtesy? Scram before I call security.”

The man staggered off to find his car, his face a florid shade, with Pansy pelting after him.

“She’s not usually like that,” Pansy gasped.

“She’s an ignorant woman.”

“Yes, she is, but-” He was trying to shut the car door though Pansy had a firm grip on it. “-it’s all a big show on the surface – and – grunt – sadly you don’t get to see what’s underneath.” She knew Miranda was rude, tactless, smart-mouthed and offensive. Boy, Miranda was something else!

“But she’s brilliant at her job.” Pansy also knew that was a big fat lie so released the door and flapped her hands helplessly at her side. “I’ll talk to her. I’ll do that. I will.”

She was thinking that sometimes it was too hard, when the old man admitted in his wintery way that his stay had been mildly pleasant, before smiling the sweetest smile Pansy had seen in a while and, touching his finger to his forehead, he drove off.
